When shopping for vintage clothing keep an open mind with respect to the sizing. A great seamstress or tailor will be able to modify the garment to fit your physique. This in turn will make any garment look custom-made.
Also, keep in mind that small adjustments can be made to give your garment a fresher, more modern look. Things such as removing dated shoulder pads or replacing large ones with smaller. Altering the collar, reshaping the neckline, tapering or removing long sleeves can completely change the look as well.
Be sure to take a moment and check the seam allowance on the inside of your garment as well as the hem allowance. With many vintage items, there is a generous seam allowance that can usually be let out if needed.
The same applies for sustainable luxury items that are not vintage, as well as less expensive clothing. A little tweak here & there makes all the difference.
How do you find a seamstress? Ask around to see who your friends use. Go speak with them in person and ask to see some of their work.
So, remember this rule of thumb: cultivate a relationship with your seamstress or tailor and make them your new BFF!
Your clothes will thank you!

Autumn is also a good time to “purge” any items you haven’t worn in a couple of years, no longer fit, or you’re just tired of them. The Vintage Label is here to help!
